The government of Puebla has initiated a security strategy to combat cargo theft and monitor highways, specifically targeting the Mexico-Puebla and Puebla-Orizaba routes. Initially, the state deployed long-range drones with a three-and-a-half-hour flight autonomy and a 50-kilometer radius to monitor the 150D highway and PEMEX pipelines. As the strategy progressed, the technological capabilities of the surveillance project were expanded. The second phase of the deployment introduced drones with 13-hour autonomy and speeds of 180 km/h, equipped with thermal sensors and night vision for real-time monitoring. In a recent update, State Secretary of Public Security, Vice Admiral Francisco Sánchez González, confirmed the incorporation of two high-technology unmanned aerial vehicles to strengthen the public security strategy. These drones are designed to enhance highway surveillance, detect illegal hydrocarbon tapping, and assist in locating missing persons. They will complement 106 existing cameras on the Puebla-Esperanza stretch of Highway 150. These aircraft feature vertical take-off and landing capabilities, high-resolution cameras, and safety mechanisms such as parachutes and protection against signal interference. Alongside these technological upgrades, Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier emphasized a judicial focus to prevent impunity. He stated that security efforts are guided by “daily heat map analysis to identify priority zones” while maintaining respect for human rights and due process. The administration is urging continues to urge security and justice institutions to ensure robust investigation files to avoid procedural errors. During the first ten days of October, security forces reported conducting 281 operations and making 122 detentions.
