Punjab anti-drug initiatives through sports and education

Overview

The Punjab government has launched a comprehensive strategy to combat substance abuse by integrating large-scale sports initiatives with educational awareness campaigns.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced the fourth edition of ‘Khedan Wattan Punjab Diyan,’ a multi-sport event scheduled from September 5 to November 29. The program aims to engage over 10 lakh participants across 38 disciplines, including para-sports, to nurture talent and redirect youth energy away from drug use. To support this, the state has allocated ₹1,794 crore for sports infrastructure, including the development of 3,148 grounds and 6,000 village gyms.

Parallel to these athletic efforts, the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign is being implemented through schools to provide long-term education on the risks of narcotics. Managed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), this initiative involves training over 21,000 teachers to identify signs of drug abuse and mental health issues, alongside community-based anti-drug clubs and student awareness activities.
