Punjab environmental and pollution enforcement

The Punjab government has initiated several environmental enforcement measures to combat pollution and littering. Under the ‘Suthra Punjab’ initiative, authorities in Lahore deployed anti-littering squads and an e-challan system to penalize waste dumping, with fines reaching up to Rs500,000 and potential imprisonment for burning garbage or tyres. To manage agricultural waste, the administration is providing machinery such as Super Seeders and rice straw shredders to farmers, while using Safe City cameras to monitor illegal burning.

Expanding the focus to air quality, the Punjab Transport Authority announced a crackdown on private vehicles emitting excessive smoke. Starting October 15, 2026, legal action will be taken against violators. To assist with compliance, the department is offering a grace period for vehicle fitness improvements and plans to introduce special one-year validity stickers for monitoring. This effort involves coordination between the transport department, environmental protection agencies, and traffic police.
