The Punjab government’s ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ housing initiative has been selected to receive the United Nations Scroll of Honour Award from UN-Habitat. The programme, recognized for providing safe and adequate housing to low-income families through Pakistan’s first fully digital housing finance scheme, has reportedly disbursed over Rs259 billion in loans to facilitate the construction of more than 200,000 houses. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif was invited to Muscat, Oman, to receive the award during the World Habitat Day event on October 5, 2026. The ceremony at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre was attended by various officials, including Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Planning Bilal Yasin and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Oman, Dr. Syed Naveed Safdar Bokhari. UN-Habitat recognized the project for its use of public financing and digital technology to improve housing access and accountability. While the programme initially targeted 100,000 homes, the Chief Minister stated that the goal has been expanded to 500,000 homes within five years. The Scroll of Honour is UN-Habitat’s highest award for contributions to housing and sustainable urban development. This year’s recipients included Maryam Nawaz alongside Htoo Weng of Myanmar, Thiago Baurmann Gubert of Brazil, Abdelmalek Ghanem of Tunisia, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
