Residents of the Pustec Municipality in Albania have reported significant shortages in infrastructure investment, specifically regarding the road network, water, and healthcare services. While international funds for sustainable development have been announced, locals claim the impact on their daily lives remains minimal, a situation exacerbated by the migration of young people from the Prespa region. Beyond physical infrastructure, the Macedonian minority in Pustec faces challenges regarding the preservation of their language and cultural identity. The Ilinden – Tirana Macedonian society has formally requested that the municipality include Macedonian on its official website to comply with Law No. 96/2017. Community members continue to call for stronger institutional representation to combat declining student numbers in local schools. A diplomatic controversy has emerged following a cultural festival in Pustec attended by North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski. During the ceremony, the Albanian national anthem was omitted, and only the North Macedonian anthem was played. Mayor Pali Kolefski stated he had requested the inclusion of both anthems beforehand, but the organizers, the ‘VMRO Albania’ association, did not comply. Kolefski subsequently apologized for the oversight. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama criticized the incident, describing it as a ‘meaningful parody’ of Balkan nationalism and defending the dignity of Albanian symbols. The Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs expressed regret, noting that while the event was organized by a local association, the presence of high-level institutional representatives made the omission a ‘serious breach of protocol and institutional etiquette.’ Local political figures, including Tedi Blushi, have criticized the government’s response, questioning why the mayor did not leave the event if protocol was not respected.
