A series of pyrotechnic explosions occurred in the State of Mexico during late August and early September 2026. On August 28, an explosion at a pyrotechnics workshop in San Pedro la Laguna, Zumpango, injured at least six people, causing a massive smoke column and shockwaves. On September 5, a more severe explosion occurred in Santa María Canchesdá, Temascalcingo, during the patron saint festivities for Nuestra Señora de la Luz. The blast originated around 9:00 PM in a small, unventilated room adjacent to the local church used for storing pyrotechnic materials. The force caused the immediate collapse of the structure's roof and a nearby wall, trapping several people under the debris. Emergency responders, including Protección Civil, regional firefighters, the Red Cross, the Mexican Army, and the National Guard, conducted rescue operations. While initial reports confirmed 10 fatalities, the death toll has since risen to at least 11, including one individual who passed away at the Hospital General de Atlacomulco. The number of injuries is reported to have reached as high as 82 people, including children, adolescents, and elderly individuals. Among the injured are local priests Fernando Chávez Cruz and Javier Sánchez Montes, who are reported to be out of danger. The State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office (FGJEM) is investigating the cause.
