Qantas loyalty promotions and annual financial results
Overview
Qantas has launched a loyalty promotion offering members a choice between double points or double status credits for marketed flights and Qantas Hotel or Holiday bookings. The offer is valid until early September.
The promotion precedes new Reserve Bank of Australia regulations scheduled for October 1. These regulations are expected to influence frequent flyer activity, as banks may provide fewer points on credit card spending and sign-ups following the elimination of certain transaction fees.
Loyalty strategist Adele Eliseo advised that while such promotions assist members in reaching higher membership tiers more quickly, travelers should consider if the cost of full-fare bookings during these periods outweighs the benefits of waiting for future sales.
In its recent annual results, Qantas Group reported a 13.8% decline in full-year underlying pre-tax profit to A$2.06 billion for the year ended June 30. This downturn was attributed to surging jet fuel costs, which more than doubled due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, costing the company over A$420 million.
In response to these shifts, Qantas has redeployed aircraft to increase capacity on European routes and announced plans to begin retiring its A380 fleet in 2028. The airline has also paused its A$150 million share buyback program. Regarding its loyalty program, Qantas confirmed that the Points Club and Green Tier sub-programs will be retired on December 8, 2026, as the company transitions to a new system allowing members to earn Status Credits through everyday spending. This overhaul will also introduce a rollover feature, permitting members to carry over up to 50% of excess Status Credits to the following membership year.
