Qatar continues to face a severe economic crisis and recession following significant damage to its energy infrastructure. Attacks on the Ras Laffan industrial hub, including Iranian drone and missile strikes, have destroyed approximately 17% of the nation’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity. This disruption has frozen a $30 billion expansion plan and resulted in weekly export losses estimated between $1.5 billion and $2 billion. LNG exports have plummeted by 96%, with only 18 cargoes shipped compared to 509 during the same period last year, resulting in an estimated $24 billion loss in gas sales. As of late August, QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure status for LNG deliveries to customers in Europe and Asia, as regular transit through the Strait of Hormuz remains largely frozen. By September 24, 2026, tracking data indicated a gradual resumption of export operations, with Qatar increasing the frequency of LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz to its highest level in over two months. At least four loaded tankers passed through the strait in a single week, with additional vessels entering the Gulf to prepare for loading. One shipment has already reached the west coast of India. While this represents an uptick, activity remains well below pre-conflict levels, when Qatar typically dispatched approximately three shipments per day. ~~Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi previously noted that undamaged sections of~~ Economic pressures have intensified as the ~~Ras Laffan complex could return to full operation within weeks once stable transit conditions are achieved in~~ national budget deficit reached approximately 31.5 billion riyals during the ~~Strait.
