Qualcomm and Huawei patent licensing agreement

Qualcomm and Huawei have announced a multi-year, broad patent licensing agreement covering several technology sectors, including 5G, computing, artificial intelligence, and networking. The arrangement involves a cross-licensing of their respective patent portfolios and includes Qualcomm’s purchase of specific Huawei patents located in the United States. Reports suggest the agreement may involve Qualcomm licensing patents related to Huawei’s ‘LogicFolding’ chipmaking technique, which aims to improve semiconductor performance.

This agreement marks a significant shift in the relationship between the two companies, as it includes Qualcomm paying for the use of Huawei’s 5G technology for the first time. While specific financial terms and the exact duration of the agreement have not been disclosed, Huawei estimated that the cumulative value of its patent licensing contracts could exceed $6.9 billion following the completion of this deal.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, Alan Fan, stated the agreement demonstrates the value of Huawei’s innovations while recognizing Qualcomm’s foundational contributions to modern communication technologies.
