The American news portal Quartz released a report identifying the Balkans as one of Europe’s most underrated regions for 2026. The report highlights the area’s diversity, spanning the Adriatic coast and Alpine valleys. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was ranked as the top destination due to its unique historical layers, including Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Jewish heritage, as well as its Olympic history. The report notes that Sarajevo’s historical core, where the Ottoman Baščaršija and Austro-Hungarian architecture intersect, justifies a trip to the region on its own. Mostar was recommended as a subsequent destination for travelers. Other featured locations include Kotor, Montenegro; Istria and Brač, Croatia; Lake Ohrid and Mavrovo National Park, North Macedonia; the Albanian Riviera, Albania; and Pristina, Kosovo. Travel experts included in the report advise visitors to focus on two to four countries rather than attempting to traverse the entire peninsula in one trip, suggesting routes be planned around bus connections and border crossings.
