Queen Sofía concludes New Orleans visit
Overview
Queen Sofía of Spain concluded a four-day visit to New Orleans, Louisiana, aimed at commemorating the Spanish historical footprint in the region and exploring ties ahead of the 250th anniversary of American independence.
During the visit, the Queen inaugurated the III ‘America&Spain250’ symposium at St. Louis Cathedral, an event organized by the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, the Historic New Orleans Collection, the Queen Sofía Foundation, and the Ramón Areces Foundation. She also attended the inauguration of the ‘Spain, Spanish America and the Atlantic World in an Age of Revolution’ exhibition at Tulane University’s Doris Z. Stone Library.
In recognition of her philanthropic work, New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno presented the Queen with the keys to the city. The Queen’s itinerary included visiting the Cabildo Museum to view historical artifacts, such as the uniforms of Bernardo de Gálvez, and meeting with the descendants of Agnes Deváux, an enslaved woman liberated via a document signed by Gálvez in the 18th century.
The visit concluded with a floral offering at the statue of General Bernardo de Gálvez on Canal Street, accompanied by Mayor Moreno, to honor Spanish casualties. The Queen also met with the ‘Isleños’ in St. Bernard Parish, a community of approximately 35 families descended from Canary Islanders who migrated to Louisiana between 1778 and 1783. The community welcomed her in traditional attire, highlighting the enduring cultural and musical heritage preserved by those who settled the Mississippi Delta to defend Spanish territory.
While these commemorative activities took place, no official state visit or high-level bilateral meeting between the Spanish monarchs and the United States administration has been established.
