Quercetin research on lung cancer inhibition

Overview

Researchers at University Hospital Erlangen have identified that quercetin, a natural flavonoid found in foods such as citrus, onions, and buckwheat, may significantly impact the progression of lung cancer.

Studies published in Cell Death Discovery indicate that the compound can act multi-directionally by targeting multiple biological processes. Experimental models using human lung cancer cell lines and mouse tissue showed that quercetin slows cancer cell division and reduces oxidative stress. Notably, the compound was found to inhibit cell migration—a critical factor in metastasis—to the point where migration almost completely ceased at highest doses.

Further observations showed a decrease in the expression of the growth-signaling protein EGFR and the immune-evading protein PD-L1. In mouse models, the research also noted a reduction in tumor foci and changes in the gut microbiome.
