Qurayyah oasis ancient pottery branding discovery

Archaeological research conducted at the Qurayyah oasis in northwestern Saudi Arabia has identified a specific type of two-color painted pottery, known as Qurayyah Painted Ware (QPW), produced approximately 3,200 years ago.

An international research team, led by the University of Vienna, utilized technological, petrographic, and geochemical analyses to determine that these ceramics were manufactured on an industrial scale. The pottery featured consistent black-and-red designs, including geometric patterns, humans, and animals such as lions, ostriches, and dogs.

Researchers suggest the pottery may represent one of the earliest known examples of a commercial brand. The findings indicate that the goods maintained a consistent technological identity and visual style that allowed them to be exported across vast distances, including to the Southern Levant, modern-day Jordan, and Israel. The high demand for these specific products led to the production of imitations in other regions, though these lacked the quality of the original Qurayyah wares. This discovery suggests that desert oasis communities were active participants in sophisticated trade networks rather than marginal groups.
