The historic Race Course Mosque in New Delhi is facing a potential demolition following reports that the Land and Development Office (L&DO) issued a notice to vacate the premises. Local religious leaders reported that the mosque’s electricity and water connections were disconnected on October 7, and access to the site has been obstructed. Imam Mohammed Harun and the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind have sought intervention from Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, citing the mosque’s status as a heritage property listed in the 1977 Delhi Gazette and on the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) website. In response to the situation, the Delhi Waqf Board has formally requested that the L&DO and the NDMC restore utility services to the mosque and its adjacent graveyard. The board’s CEO, Tanvir Ahmad, stated that the mosque is a notified Waqf property and noted that, according to available records, there are no active court cases regarding the site. The board has also notified the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the matter. Recent developments indicate the L&DO has issued a six-day eviction notice, asserting that the century-old structure constitutes an unauthorized occupation of government land. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has been identified as the agency responsible for implementing the action. While security personnel have restricted access, some worshippers have continued to enter the premises to pray. Amidst these tensions, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and a delegation from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind have criticized the Delhi Waqf Board for failing to legally challenge the order or provide sufficient assistance. In legal proceedings, the central government informed the Delhi High Court that it is taking possession of the 53-acre Race Course Club area, located near the Prime Minister’s residence, citing “national security reasons.”
