Radio broadcasting history is being commemorated through various anniversaries in Cuba and Argentina. In Cuba, celebrations mark 104 years since the first broadcast in 1922 by Luis Casas Romeroy via station 2LC. The medium has evolved from a technical novelty into a strategic national institution with over one hundred stations. Additionally, Radio Caibarién is celebrating its 41st anniversary, noting its continued operation despite economic challenges and resource shortages. In Argentina, the Day of Broadcasting (Día de la Radiodifusión) is observed on August 27 to commemorate the first transmission in 1920. This historic event was led by a group of medical students known as ‘Los Locos de la Azotea’ (The Madmen on the Rooftop), including Enrique Telémaco Susini, César Guerrico, Luis Romero Carranza, and Miguel Mujica. Operating from the rooftop of the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires, the group used a rudimentary transmitter to broadcast Richard Wagner’s opera ‘Parsifal’. Although the initial audience was estimated at fewer than 100 people, people using galena receivers, the broadcast is recognized as one of the world's first planned and systematic radio programs. This milestone established Argentina as a global pioneer in broadcasting and led to the subsequent creation of Radio Argentina. The legacy of these pioneers continues to influence the medium as it evolves from early experimental waves toward modern streaming and digital platforms.
