Radioactive steel production investigations in Philippines

Authorities in the Philippines have conducted major law enforcement operations against steel manufacturers producing substandard and radioactive materials.

On 18 July 2026, a joint operation involving the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and several other agencies raided Chuangxing Steel Incorporated in Magalang, Pampanga. The raid uncovered the unlawful possession of radioactive-bearing industrial materials and the manufacture of structurally substandard steel. Four company officers were arrested, and the nationwide distribution of the hazardous materials was halted. Ten workers showed signs of occupational radiological exposure, leading to recommendations for long-term medical surveillance.

On 14 August 2026, a similar raid was conducted by the NBI and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) at the Davao Mighty Steel Corporation in Bunawan, Davao City. Technical examinations identified radioactive isotopes, including Uranium-238, Thorium-228, Thorium-232, and Radium-226, within finished rebars, industrial powders, wastewater, and production residues. The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute confirmed the company lacked the required licenses for nuclear or radioactive materials. During this operation, 174 Filipino workers were rescued to prevent further exposure to radioactive fumes and waste.
