Following an explosion in Bucharest’s Rahova district in October 2025 that caused four deaths and 20 injuries, Bucharest City Hall initiated safety stabilization works on the damaged apartment building. Initial preparations involved technical evaluations of 270 apartments in five neighboring stairwells and the organization of the site. The stabilization process, managed by the construction firm Apolodor, began with the installation of 480 temporary support pillars, referred to as ‘popi’, in the building’s staircase. The project is designed as a multi-stage operation that includes a top-down controlled demolition of the floors above the fifth level. To maintain safety and transparency, workers utilize body-worn cameras, with footage being downloaded every two and a half hours, and criminal investigators remain present throughout the works. The intervention is also being monitored by the State Inspectorate for Construction. Residents are permitted to retrieve essential items under the supervision of specialized teams and ISU representatives. As of October 2026, controlled demolition has commenced on floors five through eight of the eight-story building. Bucharest City Hall has described this operation as an “exceptional first for Romania,” necessitated by the fact that the blast rendered the stairwell and affected apartments inaccessible and unsafe. The ongoing criminal investigation has expanded to include energy distributors and gas agents, following the previous detention of three individuals. To support those displaced, the city has provided hotel accommodations and covered rent for families moved to rental apartments.
