Rail passengers in Spain continue to face significant service disruptions, including cancellations and delays across regional and long-distance lines. In Cantabria, Renfe Cercanías services on lines such as the C-1 and C-2 have faced unexpected cancellations attributed to “rail traffic management” or “traffic readjustment.” In the Valdeorras region, commuters reported frequent delays and the replacement of regional trains between Ourense and Ponferrada with buses. Recent incidents have highlighted severe passenger distress, such as a train from Asturias to Madrid breaking down on a bridge near Campomanes, leaving passengers without power or lighting for five hours, and an Alvia service from Ourense to Santiago de Compostela losing all interior lighting. In Catalonia, technical infrastructure failures and extreme weather have severely impacted the Rodalies network. Following previous disruptions caused by copper cable thefts, the R8 line has faced suspensions, and the R2 Nord has experienced significant delays. On September 29, 2026, severe weather conditions prompted Renfe to suspend high-speed and regional services—including AVE, Avant, and Euromed—between Barcelona, Madrid, Figueres-Vilafant, and Valencia as a “precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety.” On the same day, a technical failure caused an emergency suspension of the Rodalies R4 line between Vilafranca del Penedès and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, necessitating a replacement bus service. On October 3, following a red alert from AEMET, the Generalitat decreed a suspension of Rodalies commuter services starting at 20:00, though some exceptions like the RL3, RL4, and parts of the R16 remained operational if safety permitted. Local services in Catalonia were also heavily affected. The R7 line saw a total interruption between Cerdanyola Universitat and Montcada Bifurcació, while Rodalies lines R2, R3, R4, and R8 operated under temporary speed restrictions. Additionally, the R6 line experienced interruptions between Masquefa and Piera. FGC reduced capacity on lines S1 and S2 to 50%, and the L7 line in Barcelona was completely suspended. These disruptions coincided with AEMET issuing a maximum alert for regions including Barcelonès, Maresme, and Vallès due to forecasted torrential rainfall. Furthermore, Adif maintenance works at Calella station are expected to impact the R1 line until mid-November, causing approximately 25 daily services to terminate or originate in Mataró instead of Calella.
