Rainbow trout farming development in Uttarakhand

Overview

The Munsyari region in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district has emerged as a significant hub for rainbow trout farming, utilizing the glacial streams of the Gori Ganga. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the central government has invested over 2,299 crore rupees into cold-water fisheries infrastructure, including hatcheries, feed mills, and cold storage.

Uttarakhand has become the first Himalayan state to export trout to Nepal and has established a supply agreement with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The development of these cold-water fisheries clusters is viewed as a strategic model for livelihood diversification and nutritional security across several Himalayan states, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
