Rameswaram airport development project

Overview

The Tamil Nadu government is pursuing the development of a new greenfield airport at Manikaneri in the Ramanathapuram district to improve access to Rameswaram. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has moved to apply for site clearance from the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The proposed 600-acre site was selected by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) following a pre-feasibility study that evaluated five potential locations. Land acquisition processes for the project are reportedly underway.

The airport is intended to support tourism and pilgrimage to sites such as the Ramanathaswamy Temple and Dhanushkodi. By providing an alternative to existing road and rail transport, the project aims to reduce travel times for tourists and elderly travelers while boosting the local economy.
