Four members of a Hindu family—retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata, their daughter Agami, and their son Priyam—were found dead in their locked residence in the Daspara/Machuapara area of Rangpur, Bangladesh. Investigators determined the victims were likely killed by strangulation and found the bodies in various locations throughout the home: Ganapati on the rooftop, the mother and daughter near the stairs, and the son under a bed. Two suspects, cousins Siddhartha Das (23) and Mugdho Das (19), were detained following the discovery. Authorities stated the killings allegedly occurred after Ganapati Chakraborty confronted the pair for using the synthetic drug yaba on the rooftop. To conceal the crime, the suspects reportedly ransacked the house, attempted to wipe fingerprints with detergent, and hid stolen jewelry. In court, both suspects confessed to the murders under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and a Rangpur Metropolitan Chief Magistrate's Court ordered them to be sent to Rangpur Central Jail. Ongoing investigations have identified several anomalies, including the deliberate disconnection of electricity to the home. While Siddhartha admitted to consuming multiple yaba tablets on the night of the killings, his family claims they have no knowledge of how he acquired the funds for the narcotics. Recently, the new Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Md. Mahbubur Rashid, visited the crime scene. Addressing media concerns regarding conflicting information from previous officials about the timing, location, and motives of the killings, Rashid stated that the investigation is ongoing. He emphasized that police are working to gather evidence and prepare a charge sheet, noting that physical evidence has been preserved and is not subject to tampering. Human rights organization Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has raised concerns regarding discrepancies between the official police account and information provided by relatives, local residents, and media reports.
