Rare medical cases of fetal formations

Overview

Medical professionals in Egypt and Somaliland have reported successful surgeries involving rare fetal formations.

In Egypt, specialists at the National Liver Institute at Menoufia University removed a deformed fetus from the stomach of an 18-month-old girl. The child had been admitted for severe gastrointestinal bleeding. The condition, known as ‘fetus in fetu’, occurs when one twin incompletely develops inside its sibling during pregnancy. The multidisciplinary surgical team reported that the child’s health has stabilized.

In Somaliland, medical specialists from Hargeisa Group Hospital and Amoud University successfully removed a calcified fetus, or lithopedion, from a 42-year-old woman. The patient had experienced constant abdominal pain and heaviness for three years following a pregnancy that had ceased spontaneously. Due to a lack of resources, she did not seek medical attention at the time.

A 3D CT scan revealed an 18 by 12 centimeter mass outside the uterus containing identifiable skeletal structures, including the skull, spine, ribs, and long bones. Lithopedion, often called a “stone baby,” is an extremely rare complication of ectopic pregnancy. It occurs when a fetus dies outside the uterus but is too large to be reabsorbed, leading the body to coat the tissue in calcium to prevent infection. The patient recovered without complications following the surgical removal.
