Ray Kurzweil joins Subsense neurotechnology advisory

AI pioneer and Google researcher Ray Kurzweil has joined the neurotechnology startup Subsense as a product and vision advisor. Announced at the Subsense Annual Forum in San Francisco, the role involves advising on the convergence of AI, nanotechnology, and neuroscience to evolve technology from medical use toward broader human-computer interaction.

Subsense is developing a non-surgical brain-computer interface (BCI) that utilizes inhaled, charged nanoparticles to connect the human brain to computers. Unlike surgical methods such as Neuralink, Subsense intends to deliver particles intranasally through the olfactory nerve. These particles would then respond to magnetic fields from an external headset to stimulate neural activity.

Having raised $27 million, the company has begun testing the technology on mice. While human trials are not imminent, the company aims to target neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and ALS. Kurzweil stated the objective is to merge smartphone capabilities with the brain to bypass current barriers to accessing artificial intelligence.
