In early August 2026, the Italian quiz show Reazione a Catena experienced dramatic prize volatility. On 1 August, the defending team Gli Alti e Basta failed to solve the final word, “COLLANA”, leaving the prize at €0 after it had been reduced to €3,532 during the game. Two days later, challengers Le Pappardelle reached the final round with an initial €120,000 pool that fell to €235 after buying a clue; they claimed the modest amount for the word “Insieme”. Social media users mocked the low payouts. The following week, the all-female trio Le Pappardelle turned the narrative around. On 6 August, they won €4,125 for the word “lancetta”, and on 7 August, they secured €6,750 for “pensiero”, bringing their cumulative earnings to €23,939, a result described as historic for the programme. Le Pappardelle continued their streak into mid-August. On 12 August, they reached the final stage playing for a potential €147,000 but failed to identify the word “Carta”, resulting in a reduced prize pool. By their twelfth appearance on 14 August, they reached the final round again but were unable to guess the word “Coordinate”, leaving their total accumulated prize money at €57,596. On 17 August, the group reached the final stage again, pushing their total accumulated winnings to over €90,000. However, during the following episode on 18 August, the trio failed to guess the mystery word in ‘L’Ultima Catena’, missing out on a prize pool of €1,063. Their total winnings currently stand at €96,596. During the August 17 broadcast, host Pino Insegno apologized on air for providing an invalid indication during a moment of error. In late August, the streak continued. On 20 August, the group reached the final stage but failed to secure a prize of €26,000 after being unable to identify the word “Rivestimento”.
