Recognition of nurse Razia Noreen for hospital fire rescue

Overview

Following a devastating fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on August 26, which resulted in the deaths of 14 infants, nurse Razia Noreen gained recognition for her bravery. Surveillance footage showed Noreen entering a burning third-floor neonatal nursery to rescue a newborn.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif subsequently met with Noreen to honor her actions. The Prime Minister presented her with a cash prize of 10 million rupees and announced she will be awarded the Tamgha-e-Khidmat (Medal of Service) on March 23. Noreen described the rescue as occurring amidst rapidly spreading flames and an explosion that caused darkness and chaos.
