Recovery of missing Israeli soldier from 1982 Lebanon War

Overview

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Mossad recovered the remains of Yehuda Katz, the final soldier missing from the 1982 Battle of Sultan Yacoub during the First Lebanon War. Katz, a 22-year-old tank gunner, disappeared on June 11, 1982, when his tank caught fire during an engagement with Syrian troops in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.

The recovery was achieved through a special overnight operation utilizing intelligence gathered over recent months. Katz’s remains have been returned to Israel for burial. He was the last of three soldiers from that specific engagement to be accounted for, following the recoveries of Zachary Baumel in 2019 and Zvi Feldman in 2025.
