Red Sea renewable energy microgrid operation

Overview

The Red Sea multi-utility project in Saudi Arabia has reached full commercial operation, establishing what is described as the world’s largest solar-plus-storage microgrid. This off-grid system is designed to support a large-scale tourism destination and operates independently of the national transmission network.

The microgrid integrates 358 MWac of solar PV capacity with 1,225.4 MWh of battery energy storage, supported by 112.5 MW of backup internal-combustion generation. The system utilizes grid-forming battery technology to maintain voltage and frequency while balancing variable solar production to power tourism facilities, desalination, cooling, and water treatment infrastructure.

Developed for Red Sea Global, a subsidiary of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the project was executed by SEPCOIII, a subsidiary of PowerChina, under an EPC contract with ACWA Power. Huawei provided the photovoltaic inverters and the battery storage system. To protect the surrounding marine ecosystems, the broader destination has implemented a visitor cap of one million people per year and aims for 100% renewable energy usage.
