Reflection AI launch of Beam model
Overview
Reflection AI, a Brooklyn-based startup founded by former Google DeepMind researchers, has launched Beam, an open-weight artificial intelligence model. The model is designed to compete with Chinese AI models such as Alibaba’s Qwen, DeepSeek, and Z. ai’s GLM-5.2 by providing a Western alternative for coding and agentic tasks.
Beam utilizes a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture with 501 billion total parameters, though only 23 billion are active per request. This design aims to deliver high-level reasoning and coding capabilities while reducing inference compute costs by an estimated three to four times compared to some competitors. The model was trained on 23.8 trillion tokens and features a context window of up to 1 million tokens.
Backed by investors including Nvidia and Sequoia Capital, Reflection AI has reached a valuation of approximately $25 billion. To meet training requirements, the company has secured compute resources through agreements with SpaceX and Nebius. Reflection AI intends to release the model weights under an Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to run the parameters on their own hardware for custom integration and MLOps.
