In 2025, Reggio Emilia’s cultural and creative sector generated €1.26 billion in value added, driven by software and architecture-design, despite a 16.7% decline in performing and visual arts. By the second quarter of 2026, demographic and sectoral shifts became more defined. Female-owned enterprises remained relatively stable at 8,971 units (19.1% of all active firms), representing a marginal 0.2% decline that outperformed both regional and national averages. Within this group, business services grew by 3.0%, alongside increases in personal services (2.4%) and construction (1.9%), while commerce, agriculture, manufacturing, and accommodation & catering contracted. Sole proprietorships remained the most common legal form for these firms at 65.4%. Women held 35,579 positions across the province, with the highest concentrations in business services, commerce, and manufacturing. Youth-led businesses (under 35) also showed resilience. As of late June 2026, these enterprises grew by 1.9% to reach 3,728 units, accounting for 7.9% of the local economy. This growth rate notably outpaced the overall provincial business growth of 0.2%. The expansion was most pronounced in business services (+10.8%), followed by accommodation and catering (+4.4%) and personal services (+2.6%). Conversely, youth-led agriculture, manufacturing, and commerce sectors saw declines. By September 2026, data from Confindustria Reggio Emilia indicated that manufacturing growth was becoming more selective. Industrial production rose by 3.2% and total turnover increased by 3.1% compared to the second quarter of 2025. This growth was primarily fueled by a 3.9% rise in exports, which offset a 1.1% decline in the domestic market. While employment saw a 1.0% increase, business expectations have turned negative. Approximately 81% of businesses reported that rising raw material and logistics costs are “eroding profit margins.”
