In late August 2026, Sorong hosted the Sorong Open 2026 Piala Hartono badminton tournament. The competition, held at the GOR Gala Raya, featured athletes from various districts across the Papua region, including Jayapura, Merauke, and Raja Ampat, to foster athletic development. Following the tournament, preparations reached 95 percent completion for the Papeda Summit 2026, scheduled for September 2–4. The summit aims to host approximately 800 participants and 100 speakers to generate policy recommendations for sustainable development to be presented to the President. Additionally, regional representatives held dialogues with residents in Sorong City to address community concerns regarding clean water shortages, fire prevention, and street lighting. The Papeda Summit 2026 (Papua Action for Development, Economy, and Sustainable Nature) officially opened in Sorong on September 2, 2026. Organized by the Southwest Papua Provincial Government and over 50 civil society organizations, the forum serves as a strategic platform for regional sustainable development. Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan attended the opening, stating the importance of trusting Papua in its developmental direction. The summit has gathered approximately 1,000 participants, including indigenous communities, academics, private sector representatives, and government officials from 15 ministries. Discussions focus on the blue and green economies, carbon management, environmental protection, and the empowerment of indigenous peoples. The event seeks to leverage Papua’s natural resources, such as its 34.2 million hectares of primary forest and 1.6 million hectares of mangroves, to drive a transition toward a regenerative economy.
