Overview

Water stress is intensifying across Turkey, Central Asia, and the Middle East, driven by climate change and shifting precipitation patterns. In Turkey, rising temperatures and reduced per-capita availability have led industry leaders to advocate for water as a “strategic resource” and adopt “zero water loss” principles. The World Bank has warned that Turkey could be classified as a water-scarce country by 2030.

In Central Asia, rapid glacier melt in the Tajik and Kyrgyz mountains is shrinking the Amu Darya and Syr Darya basins, threatening hydroelectric power, drinking water, and agriculture. Projections suggest water flow could reduce by up to 15% by 2040.

Globally, the crisis is impacting food security, as agriculture accounts for over 70% of freshwater withdrawals. While Turkey’s agricultural water usage stands at 77%, extreme disparities exist in the Gulf region, where countries such as Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia consume significantly higher percentages of their renewable water resources.
