Regulatory efforts to reduce animal testing in drug research

Overview

The International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) issued a joint statement calling for the accelerated development and implementation of alternatives to animal testing in human medicine development. The coalition aims to replace animal experimentation across all stages of a medicine’s life cycle whenever scientifically possible, emphasizing the need for international collaboration and the acceptance of validated non-animal methods by regulatory authorities.

Following this, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced its support for the ICMRA statement. Proposed alternatives include the use of cells, tissues, three-dimensional and microphysiological systems, computer modeling, artificial intelligence, and increased human data. The EMA noted that in the European Union, animal use for pharmaceutical regulatory testing decreased by approximately half between 2015 and 2023. The initiative seeks to harmonize requirements across countries to ensure validated alternative methods are accepted during development and authorization stages.
