The production briefing for the film ‘Possible Love’, directed by Lee Chang-dong, was held in Seoul. The film, which stars Sul Kyung-gu, Jeon Do-yeon, Jo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong, explores the interconnected lives of a laid-off worker, his wife, and a documentary director. Following the briefing, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) selected ‘Possible Love’ as South Korea’s official entry for the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. The selection committee highlighted the film’s “cinematic completeness, the clarity of the director’s message and its excellent mise-en-scene.” This selection marks Lee Chang-dong’s first feature film in eight years, following his 2018 film ‘Burning’. The committee further noted the film’s “profound exploration of class, love, and desire.” Financed by Netflix, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 23, with a streaming debut on Netflix on November 6. It is also set to premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Following its selection, the film premiered at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, where it received a six-minute standing ovation and widespread critical acclaim. The 164-minute production, which is Lee’s longest work to date, has achieved a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The narrative follows Ho-seok, a factory worker struggling with alcoholism and the aftermath of mass layoffs, and his wife Mi-ok, as they become entangled with a wealthy couple—documentarian Ye-ji and her businessman husband—who are filming a project about displaced workers. Inspired by real factory strikes in South Korea, the film examines the ethics of representing the working class. Due to explicit scenes involving nudity and sexual content, the Korea Media Rating Board has rated the film 18+. A limited theatrical release is scheduled for October 23.
