The Nagaland-set film ‘Angh’, directed by Theja Rio, was scheduled to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival after Jungle Book Studio acquired its international sales rights. Set in the early 1960s, the film depicts the tension between tradition and modernity as an American missionary arrives in a remote Konyak village. Following its premiere, ‘Angh’ won the Platform Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival. As the sole Indian film in the 12-film Platform competition, the win included a CAD 20,000 prize and granted the film automatic entry into the 2027 Oscars’ international feature film race. Shot on 16mm, the production features an Indigenous Naga cast alongside actor Douglas Henshall. Rio, who expanded the feature from his 2021 short film of the same name, described the recognition as a “very special moment” for his community. Under revised Academy rules, the film’s victory allows it to qualify directly for the International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards without being the official national submission. This places ‘Angh’ in contention alongside ‘Gondhal’, the official Indian entry selected by the Film Federation of India.
