Director Andrey Zvyagintsev, currently in exile, has released his new political noir film, “Minotaur”. The film, which won the Grand Prix at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, is set in 2022 Russia during the onset of military mobilization for the war in Ukraine. The narrative follows Gleb, a successful company director, as he deals with suspicions of his wife Galina’s infidelity. This personal struggle intersects with the pressures of state power, as Gleb is pressured by local authorities to provide employees for military mobilization. The film explores the parallel collapses of a private marriage and a nation under authoritarian rule. In addition to its success at Cannes, the film was presented at the Rome Film Fest and was selected to represent France at the Oscars. Filmed in exile in France and set in Latvia, the thriller serves as a critique of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zvyagintsev, who has lived in exile following a severe bout of Covid, describes the invasion as both a humanitarian catastrophe for Ukraine and a civilizational disaster for Russia.
