The ArtCraft development team, led by Brandon Thomas, has released ‘Crafting Apps’, a suite of seven open-source applications designed as alternatives to Adobe’s Creative Cloud. Developed using the Rust programming language and accelerated by Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 AI model, the suite includes PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, PrintCraft, EffectCraft, and DesignCraft. The applications utilize a ‘clean-room’ reconstruction method, replicating functionality, interfaces, and keyboard shortcuts based on public specifications to avoid using proprietary source code. The tools are cross-platform, supporting Windows, macOS, Linux, and web browsers via WebAssembly. Expanding the scope of his open-source initiatives, Thomas has released early alpha versions of three additional applications designed to replicate Microsoft Office functionality: WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft. Built primarily using Claude AI models and written in Rust, these tools aim to provide familiar desktop workflows for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations without subscription models. WordCraft features a ribbon-style interface and supports various formats including DOCX, ODT, and Markdown, while the suite also offers XLSX support and tables. Thomas, a software engineer with 15 years of experience, described the initiative as a protest against subscription-based software models and ‘dark patterns’ such as cancellation fees. While the project has gained traction on GitHub, Discord, and Reddit, the applications remain in an early Alpha stage. Developers have noted ongoing challenges regarding document fidelity and functional parity; for example, WordCraft is estimated to be approximately 62 percent complete, while GridCraft has reached approximately 93 percent of Excel’s worksheet functions. DeckCraft is estimated to replicate approximately 79 percent of PowerPoint’s functions. The initiative has sparked debate regarding the ethics of AI-generated code—sometimes referred to as ‘vibecoding’—and the long-term viability of single-developer open-source projects. As part of this broader initiative, the suite evolves, PhotoCraft has entered alpha stage (version 0.8.2) as an open-source image editor designed progressed to replicate Adobe Photoshop. version 0.10.0. This update introduces support for Japanese fonts and vertical text.
