The supernatural psychological horror film ‘Other Mommy’, directed by Rob Savage and based on the novel ‘Incidents Around the House’ by Josh Malerman, is undergoing international theatrical releases. Produced by James Wan’s Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the plot follows eight-year-old Bela, who encounters an ~~entity—which~~ entity that bears an ‘uncanny resemblance’ to her ~~mother—in her home.~~ mother. The entity becomes ‘increasingly aggressive’ after being rejected by the child and seeks psychological and physical control over her. The film stars Jessica Chastain in a dual role as Bela’s mother, Ursula, and the entity. Supporting cast members include Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen. Following its release, the film has received mixed to negative critical reception. In the United States, the film was released on October 9, 2026, with release dates in Brazil noted for October 8 and October 29, 2026. The film also premiered in German cinemas on October 29, 2026. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a score between 16% and 17% from critics and a 48% audience score. While some reviewers praised the film’s tension and visual originality, others criticized the underdeveloped plot and reliance on horror clichés. Recent reviews have highlighted discrepancies between the film and its source material, noting significant changes to characters and story direction compared to Malerman’s book. Critics have argued that the film lacks the subtlety and suspense of the novel, noting that while the book utilizes an uncertain perspective to build dread, the film explicitly identifies the antagonist as a demon early on, which may reduce psychological tension. One critic awarded the film a 3/5 rating, observing that while marketing suggested frequent jump scares, the scares often felt ‘low-level and expected’.
