The film ‘Fatherland’, directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, explores the 1949 return of Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann to a divided Germany following sixteen years of exile in the United States. The narrative follows Mann as he travels from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-influenced Weimar. Starring Sandra Hüller as Erika Mann, the film depicts Erika’s role as a war journalist and caretaker managing her father’s logistics and security amidst death threats. The plot examines the tensions of the early Cold War era, Mann receiving honors in both East and West Germany, and Erika’s encounter with an ex-husband who has returned from a Russian gulag. The narrative also features characters such as a CIA spy and an American reporter. Shot in black and white, the production has received critical recognition, including a Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film, which features Hanns Zischler, is scheduled for release in Italian cinemas on October 16 via MUBI. Actress Sandra Hüller, who grew up in East Germany, noted that the film expresses a “specific sense of grief that is more deeply felt by those from the former East.”
