Sharon Horgan, known for ‘Bad Sisters’ and ‘Catastrophe’, has released her new eight-part HBO comedy-drama series, ‘Youth’. Horgan serves as the series' star, writer, and executive producer. The series follows Alex, a 50-year-old divorcee and London literary agent, as she navigates middle age, career advancement, and the complexities of romance while caring for her elderly parents. The narrative explores her desire to remain relevant, seen, and desirable, while also managing professional responsibilities such as attending the Frankfurt Book Fair. The show highlights her role in the ‘sandwich generation’, balancing her own identity with the experience of sending her son, Ruari (played by Aran Murphy), off to university. The series is noted for its honest, witty, and often raunchy portrayal of aging and self-discovery, utilizing dark, ironic humor to address themes of sexuality and the search for identity after midlife. Horgan has described the series as a form of ‘autofiction’, drawing on her own life experiences and the ‘seismic changes’ she has faced, including her own divorce. The show is considered a spiritual successor to her previous works, ‘Pulling’ and ‘Catastrophe’. ‘Youth’ premiered on September 20, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, with the first two episodes released simultaneously. The production features an original score by composer Jeff Cardoni, with the premiere utilizing Radiohead’s ‘Everything In Its Right Place’ alongside tracks by Geese and LCD Soundsystem. In Australia, the series is available via HBO Max and the HBO Max Prime Video Channel. Subsequent episodes are scheduled to air weekly on Sundays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, with the series expected to conclude on November 1. The supporting cast includes Aran Murphy, Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte, Robbie Gee, Harriet Walter, Anne Reid, Freddie Fox, and Owen McDonnell.
