The film ‘The Echo Chamber’, directed by Andrea Pallaoro and based on the final screenplay by the late Bernardo Bertolucci, is competing for the Golden Lion at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The drama stars Alicia Vikander as a physiotherapist named Anne, alongside Luca Marinelli and Susan Sarandon. During the festival, Susan Sarandon reiterated that she faces ongoing professional repercussions and the loss of film roles due to her vocal support for Palestine and calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. She revealed The 79-year-old Oscar winner claimed that some Hollywood certain agencies continue to advise studios against hiring her, describing the situation as a manifestation of the industry’s ‘power structure’. Sarandon, who was dropped by the United Talent Agency in 2023 following her pro-Palestine activism, noted a perceived shift in global public narratives regarding Palestine and U.S. political ties to Israel. However, she observed that significant opposition remains within certain sectors of the American film industry, noting that major studios have previously informed her that certain projects would be impossible to undertake due to her political stances. Despite these challenges, Sarandon expressed gratitude to Pallaoro for casting her in the production despite warnings regarding her political stance. She added that while she feels unwelcome in certain industry circles, she feels ‘welcome’ on an international level and has found support among the general public. Ahead of the festival, the production secured international distribution deals through Paradise City Sales for territories including Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and several Eastern European nations, with North American sales managed by UTA Independent Film Group. Produced by Indigo Film, the film features a musical component with lead actors performing songs, supported by a soundtrack including tracks from artists such as Nick Cave, Nina Simone, and Imagine Dragons.
