The Vietnamese historical film ‘Hộ linh tráng sĩ: Bí ẩn mộ vua Đinh’ has experienced a challenging commercial launch. Early reports indicated the film earned over 4.24 billion VND, with production details highlighting a $50,000 investment to optimize the film for IMAX and extensive work on action sequences. By late August, the film faced increased financial pressure. Despite an estimated investment of 100 billion VND, revenue reached approximately 5.5 billion VND during its initial release. While cast members expressed pride in the production’s scale and historical costume quality, the film ranked fourth in recent box office standings. Producers are were looking toward the upcoming National Day holiday to drive the revenue necessary to reach the break-even point. As of September 9, the film has earned approximately 34.6 billion VND, which remains significantly below the estimated 180 billion VND required to break even. This performance potentially ends actor Tuấn Trần’s streak of consecutive 100-billion-dong hits. Following the conclusion of the holiday period, box office momentum has slowed, and the film continues to rank fourth in Vietnam. Critics have identified storytelling issues, specifically citing a “lack of a clear central message and fragmented plotlines.” Despite these commercial hurdles, the film has generated historical interest regarding the era of the 12 Warlords and the rise of Đinh Tiên Hoàng. Historian Trần Vân Anh noted that the production utilizes historical elements surrounding the unification of the country by the Đinh dynasty to frame its martial arts narrative.
