Apple TV released the trailer for the documentary ‘The Last First: Winter K2’, directed by Amir Bar-Lev, which examines the culture of extreme mountaineering through a 2021 expedition to summit K2 in winter. The film follows Icelandic climber John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani climbers Ali and Sajid Sadpara. It explores themes of commercialization, social media influence, and the dynamics between traditional climbing elites and marginalized climbers. Following its premiere on October 2, the documentary highlights the tragic outcomes of the expedition, noting that the attempt to summit during winter resulted in five deaths. Following its premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the documentary has now been released worldwide on Apple TV. The film chronicles the historic ascent completed on January 16, 2021, by a team of ten Nepalese climbers led by Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja. Through the inclusion of Sajid Sadpara, the film further examines the legacy of mountaineering in Pakistan and the intense pressures faced by climbers on one of the world’s most demanding mountains.
