Relocation of rescued Alaskan walrus calf
Overview
A five-month-old Pacific walrus calf named Annautaq has been relocated from northern Alaska to SeaWorld Orlando in Florida. The calf, weighing approximately 220 pounds, was discovered alone on a remote beach after his herd likely fled due to heavy surf.
Following his discovery by researchers, Annautaq was stabilized at the Alaska SeaLife Center. Because the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determined he could not be released back into the wild, he was transported to Florida to join one of the few U.S. institutions capable of housing the species.
Annautaq is currently undergoing a 30-day quarantine period at SeaWorld Orlando. During this time, his care team provides constant social support and up to six daily bottle feedings using a specialized high-fat formula. Once quarantine concludes, he is expected to be introduced to the park’s existing walrus herd.
