Renewable energy development in Southeast Europe is advancing through large-scale hybrid projects and strategic regional investments. In Bulgaria, Renalfa IPP and Eurowind Energy have inaugurated the enlarged Tenevo hybrid renewable energy complex, which complex in southeastern Bulgaria. The facility, operated by Tenevo Solar Technologies, combines a 242 MW peak capacity photovoltaic plant with two co-located battery energy storage systems (BESS) totaling 311 MW. The project, supported by financing from the EBRD MW and Raiffeisen Bank International, 773 MWh. The project is expected to generate approximately 332 GWh of clean electricity annually, with future plans to add more than 250 MW of wind power. Total investment for all phases of the Tenevo complex is projected to exceed EUR 500 million. Financing for the solar component included EUR 50 million from the EBRD and EUR 53 million from Raiffeisen Bank International AG, with an additional EUR 60 million expected for the second phase of the battery storage system. This project is among the first in Bulgaria to utilize a guarantee under the EU’s InvestEU programme. Concurrently, DEH DEI and Metlen are advancing a accelerating their joint energy storage partnership strategy as part of an 11.8 billion euro investment program through 2030. The collaboration aims to develop partnership targets a regional storage portfolio of up to 1,500 MW of battery capacity and 3,000 MWh of storage across Bulgaria, Romania, Bulgaria, and Italy. Under a 50/50 capital and revenue agreement, Metlen is responsible for infrastructure development and construction, while DEH manages commercial operations. The initial first phase is expected to deliver 300-500 MW of battery storage projects in Bulgaria and Romania by the first quarter of 2027. This expansion is part of supports a broader strategic shift for DEH, which intends goal to add between 1.5 and to 2 GW of new renewable capacity annually. The geographic scope of these investments treats markets annually in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Greece and Italy as an interconnected regional energy space. Eastern Europe, focusing on solar, wind, and flexible production to ensure grid stability.
