Romania is expanding its renewable energy and storage capacity to address grid stability and rising costs. In the residential sector, E.ON Energie Romania reported that over 10,500 homes were equipped with solar systems as of the first half of 2026, a 30% increase from 2025, with 91% of these installations including storage batteries. To stabilize the National Energy System (SEN) and manage renewable growth, the Ministry of Energy launched a 150 million euro funding call in September 2026. Financed through the Modernization Fund, this program supports autonomous battery energy storage systems for companies. Eligible projects must have a minimum installed power of 1 MW and a capacity of 2 MWh, with support covering up to 100% of eligible costs, capped at 69,000 euros per installed MWh and 15 million euros per company. This initiative aims to mitigate the paradox of exporting cheap solar energy during the day while being forced to import expensive energy at night. These storage efforts coincide with rising electricity prices. Hidroelectrica, the country’s largest energy producer, announced that starting in October, active energy prices for new customers and those with expiring contracts will rise from 0.45 lei/kWh to 0.515 lei/kWh, a 13% increase. Total bills are expected to rise by approximately 7% due to taxes and network tariffs. These price hikes are driven by market pressures, including low water levels in the Danube affecting hydroelectric production and reduced output at the Cernavodă nuclear plant. Recent developments include the registration of the Micăsasa commune in Sibiu as Romania’s first energy community with ANRE, enabling residents to share green energy production. Additionally, Transelectrica estimates that significant new solar, wind, and storage capacities will connect to the grid by the end of Scatec is developing the year.
