Renfe and Semaf labor dispute in Spain and Valencia rail disruptions
The Spanish Railway Drivers and Assistants Union (Semaf) called for a 24-hour strike on October 29 affecting all Renfe Group services. The union cited an “administrative blockade” regarding previous agreements and demanded improvements in railway safety, new driver recruitment, and better protocols for meteorological emergencies. Renfe responded by stating it had met all commitments from a February agreement and argued that many union demands fall outside its direct competence. Tensions escalated when Semaf requested that workers refrain from operating two commuter lines in the Valencia region due to heavy rainfall. Following these tensions, Adif confirmed the interruption of C1 (Valencia Estació Nord-Gandia) and C2 (Valencia Estació Nord-Moixent) services starting from 20:00 on a Friday. This disruption follows Semaf’s recommendation that drivers refrain from operating these lines in areas under red weather alerts for torrential rain. Renfe has criticized the union’s move as “unilateral” and “arbitrary,” maintaining that technical data from an agreement between Aemet and Adif does not justify a suspension, as no “railway red alert” exists for those specific tracks. While Rail services on the union emphasizes safety regarding Aemet’s warnings, Renfe has activated its adverse weather protocol (FMA) to monitor risks C1 (Valencia-Gandia) and adapt C2 (Valencia-Xàtiva-Moixent) Cercanías lines have since been restored. The resumption of service occurred on Monday afternoon after Adif completed safety inspections of the infrastructure using explorer trains. Additionally, long-distance services as conditions evolve. connecting the Valencian Community with Catalonia have resumed on the Valencia-Alicante stretch, and medium-distance connections between Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, and Albacete have returned to normal operations.
