Repatriation of Miguel Ángel Asturias to Guatemala
Overview
The government of President Bernardo Arévalo de León, in coordination with the family of Nobel laureate Miguel Ángel Asturias, is organizing the repatriation of the author’s remains from France to Guatemala. Asturias, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967, passed away in Madrid in 1974 and was interred at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
The repatriation is scheduled for November 12. To honor the author’s legacy, authorities have planned a series of cultural tributes and national honors. These include an exhibition of manuscripts at the National Palace of Culture, a state funeral, and a Mayan ritual at an archaeological complex in the capital. The ceremonies are expected to include Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú.
Following the commemorative activities, Asturias’s ashes will be interred at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center on November 15. Local organizers in Huehuetenango have also engaged with youth to discuss the significance of his return, which officials describe as an act of “historical justice and cultural memory.”
