Archaeologist Methodi Zlatkov has highlighted the historical significance of Tsar Samuil, describing him as one of the most heroic and exceptional rulers in Bulgarian medieval history. While Samuil’s era of struggle against the Byzantine Empire ended in military defeat, the period played a crucial role in shaping Bulgarian national identity. Following decades of negotiations between Bulgaria and Greece, the remains of Tsar Samuil—discovered in a Greek border area in 1969—were repatriated to Bulgaria under a memorandum. In exchange for the remains, Bulgaria returned 48 religious artifacts to Greece that were taken during the First World War. On October 3, the remains were officially handed over in Thessaloniki, attended by Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and transported to Sofia via military aircraft, escorted by MiG-29 and F-16 fighter jets. A state ceremony was held at Prince Alexander I Square, featuring a 21-gun salute and the national anthem. The remains were received in Sofia by high-ranking officials, including President Iliana Yotova and Prime Minister Rumen Radev, and were placed in a specially crafted three-ton marble sarcophagus at the Saint Sofia Basilica. Prime Minister Radev characterized the repatriation as a “bridge across the centuries” and a symbol of national unity. The repatriation has sparked debate in North Macedonia, where officials and historians have questioned the scientific authenticity of the remains. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski referenced historical precedents, such as the 1946 transfer of Goce Delchev's remains, fueling discussions regarding the historical identity of the medieval state. To address scientific questions, Bulgarian scientists plan to conduct interdisciplinary studies, including chemical, isotopic, and DNA analyses, to investigate the remains and determine kinship with other individuals found in accompanying coffins. Commemorations are now underway to mark the 1012th anniversary of the Tsar's death.
