REPMUS maritime robotics exercise in Portugal

Overview

The Portuguese Navy launched the 16th edition of REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems), an international exercise involving over 1,500 participants from 36 navies, 60 companies, 13 universities, and five NATO entities. Running from August 31 to September 25, 2026, the event utilizes more than 300 unmanned maritime systems across 400 square nautical miles to test technologies for warfare, surveillance, and the protection of underwater infrastructure.

During the exercise, the German company Rheinmetall demonstrated modular and interconnected unmanned systems focused on maritime operations and port infrastructure protection. Their demonstration included a containerized, mobile command and control center designed to support the German Navy. This technology employs the ‘Rheinmetall Battlesuite’ to network sensors and platforms from different manufacturers into a single operational picture.
