Republican figures have increasingly pressured Democratic Senator John Fetterman to switch political affiliations. In September, CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz suggested Fetterman should join the Republican Party, noting the Senator’s difficulty in connecting with his own party and his need to reject political orthodoxy. This followed a video of Fetterman at a GOP convention where he described himself as a ‘commonsense Democrat’ who rejects socialism. By October, President Donald Trump also publicly encouraged Fetterman to join the Republican Party, stating, “I’d love to see him as a Republican,” and claiming Fetterman “does better as a Republican than he does as a Democrat.” In a recent update on October 10, Trump reiterated these sentiments while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews. Describing Fetterman as a “great guy” with “great common sense,” Trump suggested the senator performs better in polls as a Republican. These overtures occur amid growing speculation regarding Fetterman’s political alignment due to alignment, as his diverging stances voting alignment with Senate Democrats has recently declined and he has increasingly broken with leadership on issues such as immigration and Israel. Fetterman has previously maintained that he does not plan to leave the Democratic Party, once remarking in The Washington Post that he would be a “terrible Republican.” Republican who still votes overwhelmingly with Democrats.”
